Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not begin developing it again until 2019
Line of Events
The city of New Rome is faced with a duel between Caesar Catiline, a brilliant artist who advocates a utopian future, and greedy Mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. The script was written by Francis Ford Coppola in the early 1980s, but the film was partially shelved due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001, after 30 hours of second footage was shot and a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Eddie Falco, and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after the 9/11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “predicts” the attacks. The surveillance video of Cicero entering the Ceasars office is believed to be from two different cameras, as indicated by small text in the upper left corner.

And what is the point of stupid and senseless theatricality, or rather theater?
Megalopolis is an epic and crazy mix of different films (Babylon, Casanova, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, Batman, Hudsucker Proxy and the miniseries Hollywoodland etc.). Coppola has recycled many styles of famous directors such as Luhrmann, Chazelle, Burton, Aronofsky, Fellini and Visconti. In fleeting details you can hear his own voice, which unfortunately resembles his weaker films such as “One from the Heart”. The action of the film could have been set in a more realistic place. Then the fantasy of Megalopolis would have been more effective and would have created a wow effect.
The ending was good too
Personally, I hate this type of approach, Baz Luhrmann vomit in my mouth. It undermines the serious credibility of the story. Considering this point, there are many loose moments for no reason: hats lowered, strange dance poses during the first scene and the general atmosphere. Despite everything, I liked the last quarter of the film. There were some clever and beautiful ideas.
The plot is pretty good, with connections to ancient Rome and the like
And if it weren’t for the constant intrusions, the film could have been a decent adult story. Unfortunately, the messiness and the restless theatrical silliness just eat up everything too much.
